Mission Brief
Nvidia printed the number after the close, and the tape did not get the clean victory it wanted.
Fourth-quarter revenue came in at $39.3 billion for the period ended 26 January 2025, up 78% from the year before, with data center revenue at $35.6 billion and Blackwell already carrying roughly $11 billion of the load.
The machine was still running hot, but the street was no longer paying for heat alone.
Guidance pointed to $43 billion in first-quarter revenue, yet the margin line slipped into view: about 71% expected gross margin, down from 73.5%, as the new chip line moved from promise into factory reality.
The growth did not break. The price of growth changed.
The Operation
The operation was not hidden in the revenue line; it sat in the supply chain between wafers, advanced packaging, memory, power, and the delivery clock.
Blackwell demand was real, and the company said production was ramping, but a ramp is never just a shipment curve — it is a cost curve with a deadline attached.
After DeepSeek hit the market in January and forced investors to ask what compute should cost, Nvidia had to defend the whole AI capex chain with one earnings file.
It did. Then the market read the footnotes.
A $39.3 billion quarter can still trade like a warning when the margin bridge narrows.
Rules of Engagement
Your index fund owned the trade even if you never bought the stock.
The AI complex had become a funding pipe for retirement accounts, tech payrolls, office leases, data-center debt, utility demand, and the power bill that shows up six months later with a new name.
If Blackwell margins compress, the first hit is not your grocery bill; it is the valuation math sitting inside the Nasdaq, then the hiring plan, then the capital budget, then the local power upgrade passed through to ratepayers.
The chip cleared the wire. The cost followed it home.
When one supplier carries the market, your portfolio is not diversified. It is routed.
