Qatari mediators landed in Tehran on Sunday, working with Washington, and senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan were due to sit down with Iranian counterparts there on Monday, Asharq Al-Awsat reported, with the Saudi side led by Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, according to The New Arab.Two days earlier that kingdom was under fire. The Houthis claimed on Saturday to have targeted Riyadh’s main airport and Saudi oil facilities, and Saudi authorities said on Sunday they had intercepted more missiles and drones, MoneyCheck reported. This letter attributes no attack to any party beyond what that party itself claims.Washington kept its own clock. CNN reported Monday, as relayed by TheStreet, that US forces could strike Iran within 96 hours of receiving an order from President Trump, and that most officials expect any such order after the midterm elections; Trump said Sunday he was still deciding between a deal and action, TheStreet reported. Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, said Israel has no intention of attacking Iran before its own election on Tuesday, The New Arab reported. Two analysts read the drop differently from the headline. Vandana Hari of Vanda Insights said the reprieve may prove temporary, and Priyanka Sachdeva of Phillip Nova said the pullback looked more like position adjustments and risk management than any real improvement in supply. If she is right, the market sold a date rather than a barrel — a calendar of talks, elections and a possible order, not a change in what leaves the Gulf. US Central Command said it has helped Gulf countries export more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil since summer, that more than 3,000 commercial vessels have passed through the Strait of Hormuz with its support, and that the main transit routes are clear of Iranian sea mines, The New Arab reported. The Monday oil report carried by Asharq Al-Awsat said the war, which began on 28 February, continues to disrupt shipping through Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb. One counts what got through and the other describes what is still disrupted, and this letter cannot reconcile them.The price of the doubt has its own estimate. Michael Alfaro of Gallo Partners told CNBC that uncertainty adds about $20 a barrel to oil, MoneyCheck reported; that is one fund executive’s figure, not a measurement.Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency said he does not expect energy markets in 2027 to return to pre-war levels, Asharq Al-Awsat reported, and the Saudi and Singaporean energy ministers said Saudi Aramco will begin storing crude in Singapore in the second half of 2027. A kingdom that was targeted on Saturday sent its defence minister to Tehran on Monday. Whether the market is pricing the missiles or the mission, the sources do not say. Birol’s remark points past the talks: his horizon is 2027, and the storage Saudi Arabia is building in Singapore is dated the same year. That is analysis, not a forecast.On one side, a defence minister at a table in Tehran. On the other, a barrel that settled Friday at its highest since April. CME Group’s FedWatch showed a 90 percent chance of no change, Investopedia reported, and TheStreet quoted analyst Kyle Rodda at about 10 percent for a hike at this meeting; both are market-implied odds, not Fed signals. Alphabet and Microsoft report after the close Wednesday, and Amazon reports Thursday.
