Thursday, American shoppers spent a record $6.4 billion online on Thanksgiving Day itself, up more than 5 percent from a year earlier — a number retailers and analysts alike treated as an unambiguous win, the first data point in what would become the biggest online holiday shopping period ever recorded.
Salesforce’s parallel tracking, released the same week, told a less comfortable version of the identical story: order volume, the actual number of items shoppers put in their carts, fell 1 to 2 percent year over year, even as total dollars spent rose because average prices climbed roughly 7 percent.
A headline that reads ‘record holiday spending’ and an underlying reality of ‘Americans bought fewer things at higher prices’ are not in conflict. They are the same tariff story wearing a strong-economy costume — the dollar figure went up because the price tag did, not because anyone’s basket got any fuller.
Discounts on electronics, the category most exposed to the year’s tariff waves, still peaked around 31 percent off list price — a number retailers can only sustain by having built the tariff cost into the list price first, so the ‘deal’ was discounting a number that was already inflated to absorb it.
Everyone called it the biggest shopping day ever. Almost nobody asked what ‘biggest’ was actually measuring.
The Operation
Retailers facing tariff-inflated input costs have exactly three levers: raise the sticker price, shrink the margin, or shrink the discount depth — and this season’s data shows nearly all of them chose the first option and then discounted from that already-higher number to preserve the appearance of a deal.
That strategy works precisely once, or at most a few holiday seasons in a row, before shoppers’ price anchors adjust and the ‘deal’ stops feeling like one — which is exactly why order volumes, not just dollar totals, are the number retail executives were watching far more nervously than the press releases let on.
Buy Now, Pay Later usage hit a record $20 billion for the season, up double digits year over year. When shoppers spend more in total dollars while buying fewer items and leaning harder on installment credit to do it, that is not resilience. That is a household budget stretching to meet a price level it didn’t choose.
Mobile commerce crossed 50 percent of all online holiday spend for the first time, a structural shift that had nothing to do with tariffs — but it meant the price-and-volume story played out on a screen every shopper could see in real time, deal by deal, cart by cart.
The channel shifted to mobile. The math shifting underneath it stayed exactly where the tariffs left it.
Rules of Engagement
A family that spent more this holiday season than last year, while buying fewer gifts, isn’t experiencing a strong economy — they’re experiencing the tariff pass-through arriving exactly where economists predicted it would: at the checkout screen, dressed up as a Black Friday deal.
Rising Buy Now, Pay Later usage alongside falling order volumes is a specific, trackable warning sign — it means the spending records making headlines are increasingly financed spending, not flush-wallet spending, and financed spending has a bill that arrives in January regardless of how good the sale felt in November.
If this season’s ‘record spending’ came with a smaller cart and a bigger installment plan, you didn’t get a good deal — you got the tariff bill, spread across four payments instead of one.
