Mission Brief

The order landed on 2 April, and by the next session the market had stripped the paint off the word liberation.

A 10% baseline tariff was set for all imports, with higher reciprocal rates aimed at dozens of trading partners, and Reuters reported the dollar falling to six-month lows against the euro while gold hit a record $3,167.57 an ounce.

Stocks, oil, and the dollar all sold off in the same frame, a rare alignment that told traders the pressure was not just on foreign exporters.

It was on the U.S. asset itself.

Tariffs were meant to tax the border. Markets taxed the dollar first.

The Operation

Port channel

The mechanism was brutal because it touched every invoice at once: supplier quote, purchase order, landed cost, warehouse margin, retailer shelf, consumer card.

The White House framed the action around goods trade deficits and non-reciprocal practices, but the supply chain read it as a new checkpoint with a fee schedule attached.

Importers had three choices — eat margin, raise price, or halt orders until the next rule changed — and none of them helped working capital.

Ports became policy desks with forklifts.

A tariff is collected by Customs, but financed by whoever cannot wait.

Your exposure

This is where the move leaves Washington and enters the cart.

A 10% tariff does not stay clean when freight, insurance, financing, wholesaler spread, sales tax, and replacement inventory all take their cut on the new base.

The cheap appliance gets less cheap, the car repair part takes longer, the small retailer trims staff before it admits the margin is gone, and the household learns that policy can hide inside a receipt.

The border moved inland overnight.

If the import bill rises, your checkout total becomes the collection point.
