Crude traded like demand had been cut off at the valve.

On 8 April, Reuters reported Brent futures settling down $1.39, or 2.16%, near four-year lows as the U.S.-China trade fight fed recession fears; by the next session oil had traded below $60 before snapping back on the tariff pause.

Energy desks were no longer asking whether barrels existed.

They were asking who would need them.

Supply did not vanish. Demand confidence did.

The Operation

Refinery map

The energy operation came through macro channels, not a blockade.

Tariffs threatened goods flow, goods flow threatened factory runs, factory runs threatened diesel demand, and diesel demand sits at the center of freight, mining, farming, and the blacktop economy.

OPEC+ was still preparing added supply into a market now trying to handicap recession, while U.S. crude stocks and refinery behavior gave traders another reason to sell the front of the curve.

The barrel was caught between producers adding and buyers freezing.

In energy war, a port can close without a missile. Orders just stop.

Rules of Engagement

Your exposure

Cheap oil sounds like relief until the reason shows up.

Gasoline can fall while paychecks get less secure, while trucking slows, while overtime disappears, while the same tariff policy that cut crude also raises the price of the parts needed to keep the car running.

The pump may give back a few dollars before the labor market takes many more.

Oil broke first. The street read the rest.

Lower fuel is not a gift when it is priced off weaker demand.
