DAILY DOSSIER

MISSION BRIEF

Updated 1115 ET

An oil supply route carrying four to five per cent of the world’s crude went offline this weekend. Brent is at a four-month high. Gold fell.

Start with what happened. On Friday, drones launched from Iraq’s Maysan province struck pumping stations on Saudi Arabia’s East-West crude pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina regions. There were fires and injuries and no reported deaths. No group has claimed responsibility; analysts point to Iran-aligned militias operating in Iraq. Iraq condemned the strikes and said it does not accept its territory being used as a launchpad. Riyadh shut the line.

That line matters more than its name suggests. It runs 1,200 kilometres from the Abqaiq field to Yanbu on the Red Sea and has been moving **four to five million barrels a day** in recent months, four to five per cent of global supply. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed since March, it is Saudi Arabia’s principal way of getting crude to market without using the strait. The Ministry of Energy called the shutdown a precaution while teams assess safety. Over the weekend a vessel was also struck in Hormuz itself.

Brent responded as you would expect. It is at **$109** this morning, up about 4.3% on the day and the highest in four months. Before this conflict began it was $72\.

Gold did not. It fell below **$4,300** an ounce, trading near $4,270 and down about 1.8% on the day, its lowest in more than a month and a third consecutive weekly decline. A stronger dollar and the expectation of a Federal Reserve rate increase on Wednesday outweighed the geopolitics. Markets are pricing roughly **86%** for a quarter-point hike, and the ten-year Treasury note is near 4.96%, close to its highest since October 2023\.

A supply attack on the largest exporter’s main export route is the textbook case for owning gold, and gold sold off. That tells you what is actually setting the price. The metal pays no yield, so its competition is the real return on cash and Treasuries, and the market has concluded that Wednesday’s decision moves that return more than a pipeline does. The haven bid has not disappeared. It has been outbid by the discount rate.

Where should you invest $100 right now?

Elon Musk just invented and patented [this new AI technology…](https://get.blackopsaccess.com/6a97ee8dbebb3962c5709e21)

And he’s predicting it will launch a NEW industry that will grow more than 7 million percent in the coming years.

Even if he’s only 10% right, that would still be enough to grow $100 into more than $700,000.

THE OPERATION

A shortage, or a demand collapse

The supply arithmetic was already severe before Friday. The International Energy Agency’s September report, published the same day as the attack, put Saudi crude supply at **6 million barrels a day** in August, its lowest in more than three decades, after a fall of 2.3 million barrels a day during the month alone. OPEC+ production dropped 1.8 million to 38.8 million. Global supply is now seen falling 5.7 million barrels a day across 2026, roughly six per cent. Global stocks fell to 7.8 billion barrels, the lowest since 2023, and the agency pushed its expected Gulf recovery out to 2027\.

So the pipeline did not go down in a well-supplied market. It went down in one already running its thinnest inventories in three years, with the strait that normally carries the region’s exports shut and the bypass now shut behind it.

Here is the part that should stop anyone reaching for a simple trade. The agency expects global oil demand to **contract** by 2.5 million barrels a day this year. OPEC expects it to grow by 380,000\. The two forecasts are nearly 2.9 million barrels a day apart, which is more than half the entire supply loss they are arguing about. Nobody actually knows whether this is a shortage or a demand collapse wearing a shortage’s clothes.

That ambiguity is exactly why gold is not rallying. A supply-driven oil shock raises prices and destroys demand at the same time. It is inflationary and contractionary in one move, which is the one combination a central bank cannot fix, because the tool that addresses the first makes the second worse. Faced with that, the market is not buying protection against disorder. It is buying dollars and pricing a hike.

For the Federal Reserve, none of this appears in the data it will look at on Wednesday. August consumer prices, released Friday, showed headline inflation at 3.4% and core easing to 2.4%. This weekend’s oil move cannot be in an August index. It enters the September figures, published in October, after this meeting and with the next one on October 27 and 28\.

Notice which assets are being treated as the safe ones. Investors facing a live supply interruption in the Gulf are selling the metal and buying the currency and the debt of a government paying 4.96% for ten-year money and running interest costs above $930 billion. That is not a judgement that American finances are sound. It is a judgement that a yield you can collect beats an insurance policy that pays nothing, for as long as the rate cycle points upward. The moment that expectation turns, the same logic runs backwards, and it will run backwards faster than it ran forwards.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

Wednesday, then Riyadh

Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. Eastern. The decision and the Summary of Economic Projections. The projections are where an oil shock would first appear, in the inflation path rather than the rate path. If the committee raises and the projections still show inflation returning to target, it is telling you it treats this as a supply event to be looked through.

Watch whether gold and oil re-couple. Today they are moving in opposite directions, which is a bet on the Fed. If gold turns higher while oil stays bid, the market has stopped treating the shock as temporary, and that shift will happen before any data confirms it.

The Saudi restart is the single largest swing factor this week, larger than the meeting. The energy ministry called the closure a precaution pending safety assessment, not a repair estimate. A line back within days is a price spike. A line down for weeks, with Hormuz closed, is a different market entirely.

Thursday and Friday, the Bank of Japan. Its September meeting falls on the 17th and 18th, one to two days after the Fed, with a move to 1.25% from 1.00% widely expected. Two of the three largest central banks tightening inside seventy-two hours, into an energy shock, is the part of this week that is not being discussed.

For anything energy-exposed, the relevant number is not the Brent price but the spread between it and what your counterparties assumed. Brent at $109 against $72 before the conflict is a 51% increase in a primary input cost, and August producer prices were already running at 5.4% before this weekend happened.

The exposure is an oil shock that the safe-haven asset is refusing to price. Saudi Arabia’s main pipeline, four to five per cent of world supply, is shut after a drone attack, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed since March, Saudi output is at a thirty-year low, global inventories are the thinnest since 2023 and Brent is at $109\. Gold responded by falling below $4,300 to a one-month low, because the market would rather own a dollar yielding something ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting priced at 86% for a hike. Both of those positions cannot be right for long. Either the Gulf stabilises and oil gives the gain back, or it does not and the metal that just sold off into a supply war becomes the most mispriced asset on the board.
