Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics finally published the November Consumer Price Index — the first full inflation reading in over two months, arriving with an asterisk large enough to undercut its own usefulness: October’s data, lost entirely to the shutdown, would never be collected, leaving a permanent gap in the historical record no later release could ever fill.

The November number itself landed without the customary month-over-month comparison for the missing month, meaning economists, the Fed, and Congress were all reading a data point that couldn’t be fully contextualized against the one that came immediately before it.

The delayed report complicated something more immediate than historical record-keeping: Social Security’s 2026 cost-of-living adjustment, legally required to be calculated from inflation data that arrived late and incomplete, on a timeline that doesn’t pause for a data agency’s own recovery schedule.

The number came out. The confidence anyone could place in the number around it did not fully recover.

The Fed had already made two rate decisions, in October and December, partially blind to this exact data — Thursday’s release didn’t retroactively fix those decisions, it just confirmed, after the fact, whether the fog Powell described had cleared into something better or worse than officials guessed at the time.

Markets that had spent two months pricing Fed policy off private-sector proxies — credit card data, ADP payrolls, Indeed job postings — now had to reconcile those proxies against the real, if incomplete, government number, a reconciliation that rarely lines up cleanly and often forces a repricing in whichever direction the gap runs.

The White House, having fired one BLS commissioner in August over a report it didn’t like, now faced a data agency publishing genuinely damaged information for reasons entirely outside anyone’s political control — the credibility question and the capacity question had become impossible to fully separate.

Nobody could prove the data was manipulated. Nobody could prove it wasn’t damaged either, and damage doesn’t need intent to cost just as much.

Every household whose Social Security check, tax bracket, or federal benefit adjusts based on official inflation data is relying on a number the government itself has flagged as structurally incomplete for the period the shutdown swallowed — an asterisk that doesn’t show up on the benefit statement but sits underneath it regardless.

For anyone budgeting off the assumption that ‘official inflation data’ means complete, reliable, apples-to-apples data, this cycle is the reminder that the assumption itself briefly stopped being true, through no fault of the data collectors and entirely because of a funding fight that had nothing to do with prices at all.
