Intercepted daily.30 October 2026Daily Dossier MISSION BRIEFIntercepted 1030 ET At 9:30 this morning the Nasdaq Composite opened 2.26 percent lower, at 25,592.49, its lowest opening level in more than two months, Reuters reported, and the S&P 500 opened down 1.16 percent at 7,631.07 while the Dow opened up 0.08 percent.By 10:21 a.m. Eastern the S&P 500 stood at 7,605.60, down 1.49 percent, the Nasdaq at 25,524.20, down 2.52 percent, and the Dow at 51,963.26, down 0.72 percent, on a Yahoo Finance ticker, and the Russell 2000 of smaller companies, which had risen 1.01 percent on Thursday, was down 1.08 percent. Those are intraday readings and they will have changed by the time this letter is read. The reports behind it came in waves. Alphabet’s results landed after Wednesday’s close, and on Thursday its shares fell 12.64 percent, from 324.89 to 283.82, Stock Titan reported, with capital spending of 51.4 billion in the quarter that left Alphabet’s own after-spending measure at negative 9.1 billion, its second negative quarter in a row.Amazon reported after Thursday’s close. Its trailing twelve-month after-spending measure was negative by more than 42 billion through September, against a prior record shortfall of about 23 billion in 2022 and under 8 billion three months earlier, Yahoo Finance reported, and its spending on property and equipment in the quarter was about 77 billion, against 35 billion a year before. Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue of 15.0 to 16.0 billion after 16.5 billion in the third, Stock Titan reported, and its shares were down more than 28 percent at 10:21, with chief executive Lip-Bu Tan pointing to weak personal computer sales tied to memory prices, Yahoo Finance reported. On Thursday the S&P 500 fell 0.30 percent while its equal-weighted version rose 1.21 percent, Saxo Bank reported, because the losses sat in the largest companies. This morning the smaller stocks fell with them. Two of the Magnificent Seven are now reporting spending that outruns what their operations produce, which is a different fact from a missed earnings number, though Alphabet’s figure covers one quarter and Amazon’s covers twelve months. That is analysis, not a forecast.Thursday, most of the stocks in the index rose and the index fell anyway. By 10:21 this morning the smaller ones had joined it. THE OPERATIONWhere the spending went Follow the spending from the top. Alphabet’s cloud revenue more than doubled and its search revenue grew 12 percent, slower than the quarter before, Stock Titan reported, and the company still reported an after-spending measure of negative 9.1 billion, which is what is left once the bill for equipment and buildings is paid.Amazon’s web services sales grew 39 percent, CappNotes reported, and its shares fell 4.25 percent in Thursday’s session and about 7 percent after the close, Saxo Bank reported, with the spending figures landing in the same hours. The sources give the quarter’s operating inflow and the equipment bill in numbers that do not subtract cleanly, so this letter prints neither as a gap.Intel’s trouble was its own forecast, not anyone’s spending plan.Thirteen hours ahead of New York, the damage arrived in memory chips first. Samsung Electronics fell 3.02 percent and SK hynix fell 7.08 percent in Seoul, and the Kospi closed at 5,730.74, down 3.48 percent, after a curb on automated trading was triggered at about 10:05 a.m. local time, the first activation in 11 trading sessions and the first since the Kospi’s 7.57 percent plunge on 15 October, the Korea Times reported. Micron had fallen 4.98 percent in New York on Thursday.A Shinhan Securities analyst, Kang Jin-hyuk, described it as a decline across the AI value chain, the Korea Times reported. This letter prints the quote and does not test it.Oil sat through all of it. December Brent, which expires today, settled Thursday at 114.88 a barrel, down 0.4 percent, the more active January contract at 110.80, down 0.8 percent, and WTI at 102.00, down 0.8 percent, Rigzone reported from Bloomberg, with Brent up more than 10 percent in October. Yesterday’s letter said Iran had not commented on the Vance letter. Tasnim has since reported that Iran received it, and a top Iranian negotiator said Tehran will not change its peace deal terms, Bloomberg reported. The Associated Press, citing diplomats, reported that American officials told regional countries to prepare for possible renewed action after the ballots are cast. Four companies reported. Alphabet and Amazon showed spending outrunning operations, Microsoft showed a surplus after spending, and Intel gave a forecast. Seoul’s chipmakers fell the same day, an analyst there tied it to the first two, and no source this letter has opened gives the share of any move that belongs to any one report. That is analysis, not a forecast.Microsoft spent 39.4 billion on property and equipment in its quarter and had 18.6 billion left over, Stock Titan reported, and its shares closed Thursday down 0.16 percent. Alphabet spent 51.4 billion and its shares closed down 12.64 percent. RULES OF ENGAGEMENTYour exposure Thursday’s closes, per CappNotes: the S&P 500 at 7,720.39, down 0.30 percent; the Dow at 52,342.56, down 0.25 percent; the Nasdaq Composite at 26,184.72, down 1.38 percent; the VIX at 17.20\. The ten-year Treasury yield closed at 4.98 percent, down 7 basis points. At 10:21 this morning Yahoo Finance had the ten-year at 4.945 percent and the VIX at 18.85, both intraday.December gold settled Thursday at 4,031.70 an ounce, down 0.49 percent, per CappNotes, and Yahoo Finance had gold futures down 2.87 percent, at 3,915.80, at 10:21 this morning, an intraday reading. Two sources quote Brent about 5 a barrel apart this morning, and this letter does not reconcile them. The Employment Cost Index came out at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Employer compensation costs rose 0.8 percent in the third quarter and 3.4 percent from a year earlier, with wages and salaries up 3.1 percent over the year and benefits up 3.9 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics release shows. Yahoo Finance’s calendar had expected 0.8 percent for the quarter, after 0.9 percent in the second. The dates ahead are fixed. The midterm elections are Tuesday 3 November. The Labor Department’s October employment report is due at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Friday 6 November, after September’s gain of 29,000 jobs and 4.2 percent unemployment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says. The Fed’s next decision is Wednesday 9 December, and the second estimate of third-quarter growth is due 25 November.AAA’s page dated 29 October put regular gasoline at 4.2258 a gallon, against 4.4558 a month ago and 3.0384 a year ago, with diesel at 6.3347. Anyone who owns a broad index fund owns the largest of these companies in proportion to their size, which is how an index falls while most of its stocks rise, and the dates ahead are Tuesday 3 November, Friday 6 November and Wednesday 9 December. The statement will show one number, and someone on television will call it a rotation.
